Girls Soccer vs Pomona Catholic

May 13, 2021

Cate GVS 3 – 0 Pomona Catholic (CIF Round #1)

Saves: Taylor Kane ’21 (5)

Assists: Charlotte Weis ’22, Tali Nam ’21(2)

Goals: Jolea Moes ’21, Gigi Geyer ’23, Rachel Ma ’22

The Cate girls varsity soccer team played so well yesterday.  The final tally for “completed passes” on the stats sheet was over 175.  The possession game was just beautiful to watch.  It resulted in some nice goals too.  The first came around the 9-minute mark when a big switch from Tali Nam at left midfield was collected by Charlotte Weis on the right.  She returned the ball one touch with a cross to the left side of the box and onto the foot of Jolea Moes who slotted it to the right of the keeper on her second touch.  It’s hard to defend that kind of ball movement.  The second goal was the happy result of Charlotte’s corner kick.  The big cross ended up with Tamsyn Taptich ’23 who made a quick pass to Tali.  Tali then made a clever assist by playing the ball off the crossbar onto Gigi Geyer’s crashing run.  And in the second half, Emie Nam ’23 collected a punt in the middle of the field and played Tali’s diagonal run.  Tali looked up, quickly found Rachel Ma streaking straight up the center and Rachel touched it neatly past the goalkeeper.  From the goalkeeper’s punt to putting the ball in the back of the net, the quick passing took less than 15 seconds. That’s fast. As you will also see in the highlight reel, Coco Le Roy ’22 and Francesca Castellarin ’22 kept working back to create stunning passing sequences.  The defensive shape was particularly good yesterday as well, with pressure-cover angles constantly considered. Tamsyn Taptich and Ava Bracher ’23 frequently created opportunities to attack out of the back and got involved in almost every big switch, moving the ball easily across the field and up to the midfield.  Olivia Dorion ’23 played one of her best games ever; her first touch was so precise, her head up as she received the ball, and she connected pass after pass even under the high stakes condition of last-man-back. Her partner in this effort, Josie Frazer ’24, stepped into the new role in the middle of the field with all the composure and ability we’ve come to expect from her.  Of course, we made little mistakes too, but the team’s effort to move to be first to the ball and connect quick passes left little opportunity for Pomona Catholic.  When they did break through, Taylor Kane was there to make another set of impressive saves.  We’re so lucky to have ended this season on a high note and now we get to play another home game tomorrow.  Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00pm and we play a big school from Bolsa Grande.  It’s soccer, so anything could happen, we play well at home, and nobody creates passing angles like we do; I like our chances.  Come cheer on these amazing girls who love being on the field together.
