It’s been a lot of volleyball for the Cate Boys Varsity Volleyball over the last 5 days.

In a fun-filled non-league match with cross-town rival Carpinteria High last Thursday night, Cate swept in three sets 25-17, 25-14, 25-20.

The team then traveled to Calabasas High to play in the Chatsworth tournament on Friday and Saturday. This was an amazing weekend for the team in terms of team bonding, building confidence and showing themselves they can rise to the occasion and battle against some tough teams. Overall they went 4-4 and took second to Grant High in the Bronze Division.

“I think this past weekend’s tournament set a new team mentality for the boys. They came away with some great experience and more confidence in themselves that I believe carried into tonight’s match against Bishop.”

Ben Richmond ’24 came out strong both in the front and back row, where he earned a double-double of 12 kills and 16 digs along with one block. Over the past weekend, Max DeVore ’25 and Henry Bouma ’25 both really came into their own, and it was great to see it continue into this match. Max passed well and matched his kills and digs with 7 a piece, while Henry swung for 3 kills and tallied 4 blocks. Our middles Zach Coulter ’25 and Lucian Tann “26 were we active as well, earning 2 and 4 kills respectively along with adding a block and dig each. On defense, libero Lucas Huiner ’25 had one of his better nights passing well and scooping up 10 digs, followed by Oliver Lee ’24 with 6 digs, and Patrick Wykoff ’27 coming in to cause trouble with his wicked float serve. And setter Zadin Stephens ’25 had one of his best nights, distributing the balls well to his offense, while also earning 5 kills of his own, a block and 9 digs. Bishop’s scrappy defense kept balls alive and it was great to see Cate stay focused and diligent during the long rallies.
Scores: 25-21, 25-17, 25-22

Next match is away against St. Bonaventure @ 6:00.
