Defensive Struggles and Missed Opportunities Plague Cate Rams

Barron Crayton ’26 was the only multi-hit day for the Rams.

The Cate baseball team had their 5-game winning streak snapped on Thursday, March 28, with an 8-0 loss to visiting Valley Christian Academy from Santa Maria. The loss pushes Cate to 5-3.

The Rams struggled to figure out the hard-throwing right-hander from Valley Christian. Peter Lehman ’25, Ethan Gibson ’25, and Josh Butler ’26 all had singles on the day. Barron Crayton ’26 collected the only multi-hit day for the Rams with two singles. Cate struggled to put the ball in play, striking out 10 times.

Quinn Pullen ’26 did a fine job on the mound for Cate. He went 5 and 2/3 innings, yielding 4 hits, 6 runs (0 earned) and striking out 6. Butler ’26 came on in relief and tallied one strikeout. Ultimately, Cate’s defense was the deciding factor today; the Rams didn’t make the plays when presented with the opportunity and committed 6 errors on the day.

Coaches Comments: We were not our best selves yesterday against a good team. Losses are manageable, but not playing your best can be. The good news is that we have plenty of time to correct our mistakes. We’re a young team with all of our goals still in front of us. I have all the confidence in the world that we will get right back to work and get better for the league play that is coming up.

The Rams are back in action against Newbury Park Adventist on the road on Wednesday, April 3. That game will start at 4 pm.
