Rain Can’t Dampen Cate’s Spirits

Cate 7
Valencia 6
Record: 4-2

Cate upset Valencia in a huge 7-6 win at home today! From the draws to the transition, Cate quickly got in the heads of Valencia and left it all on the field. After Valencia quickly won two draws and scored twice in the opening three minutes, Riley Pan ’24 and Lucy Guilbert-Neil ’25 adjusted to their center and then dominated the center circle and draws for the rest of the game (winning 12 of the next 14). Cate then also controlled the tempo of the game. Lucy Guilbert-Neal scored first for Cate with a left-handed goal in the upper corner four minutes into the first quarter. Maia Holmes ’26 was then the force to be reckoned with on attack- scoring the following six goals. Her composure and quick first two steps gave Maia the advantage on the crease rolls and drives from the 8M. Our overall strength today was in the midfield passing and the re-defends. We made Valencia consistently react to us, which caused forced turnovers.

Other highlights include Mel Davidson ’24, a new senior, who caused three turnovers. Peri James ’25 played well in the midfield and on the attack, where her speed was a major threat. Lilly Whelan ’25 stepped up on the attack and as a support player. Lauren Hubbs ’26 played her best game this season, mainly as a defender, where her slides and double teams were crucial.

Coach Renee Mack says, “Overall, a win like this builds the confidence in a young team. I was proud of everyone today. I can’t wait for next Thursday when we take on Thacher in Ojai.”

Thank you to the fans for your support in the rain.
