Cate Swimming Dominates Invitational with Varsity and JV Triumphs

Impressive performances and record-breaking swims lead Cate to wide-margin victories against Bishop Diego, Dunn, Laguna Blanca, and St. Bonaventure.

Cate Swimming hosted Bishop Diego, Dunn, Laguna Blanca and St. Bonaventure today in an invitational meet format. Each of Cate’s varsity and JV squads won by wide margins. The Cate Varsity Boys scored 112 points; Laguna Blanca was second with 19. The Varsity girls likewise tallied 98 points to 17 for runner up Dunn. In the JV meet, Cate’s boys defeated St. Bonaventure 48-21, and the girls 49-10.

The Cate boys’ team was led by five first place finishes from the freshman trio of Wil Rivera (200 IM, 500 free), Josiah Hansen (100 fly, 100 back), and Devon Liang (100 breast). Eric Jin ’26 had a breakout performance to win the 200 freestyle. All four swimmers notched times in the all-time top-10 Cate performers’ list.

Meanwhile, the upperclassmen led the way in relay action, with Joba Samson ’25, Phin Stephenson ’25, Ben White ’25 and Zach White ’24 teaming up to win the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.

In the girls’ meet, Madeleine Kollock ’27 won a close race in the 200 freestyle, and then school record holder Jen Won ’26 sailed to victory once again in the 100 butterfly. Stella Rogers ‘25 improved on her season-best time to win the 100 freestyle, and Michelle Wu ’27 cracked the all-time top 10 Cate performers’ list with her first-place finish in the 100 breaststroke.

Cate also swept the girls’ relays. Rogers and Won teamed with Angie Zoric ’24 and Wu to win the 200 medley relay, and with Zoric and Kollock to take the 400 freestyle relay. Finally, Kollock and Zoric joined with Makayla Niu ’27 and Caroline Keohane ’24 to place first in the 200 freestyle relay.

A small group of Cate swimmers, including Hansen, Stephenson and Zach and Ben White will compete at the Mount SAC Winterfest invitational over the spring break. The full Cate team will be back in action at home against Carpinteria on April 5.
