Impressive Pitching and Grit Highlight Debut Game

The Cate baseball team opened up its season with a 12-1 loss to Thacher on Thursday, February 15th. The score was a tight 4-1 until a big Thacher rally in the 5th inning did the Rams in.
Quinn Pullen ’25 got the start on the mound for the Cate and was fantastic. He went three and 1/3 innings, yielded just three hits, and struck out 9. Chase Meyer ’26 and Josh Butler ’26 came on in relief for the Rams. Meyer ’26 and Andrew Tanner ’27 made some nice plays on the defensive side of things for Cate, while Noah Casbarro ’26 did a solid job behind the dish.

Offensively, the Rams were limited to just one hit. Butler ’25 punched a single up the middle to plate the one Cate run.

The score of this one needs to reflect how close it was in our eyes. It was a 1-0 game through 3 innings and 4-1 into the 5th. I was impressed with how we handled ourselves against an excellent and experienced Thacher squad. We did some really good things for a group that has had such limited practice and is still gelling and coming together. We knew we would make some mistakes in our first game, but we played a pretty clean game for the most part. This group is going to be tough to beat moving forward.

The Rams and Toads match up again on Saturday, February 17th, in Ojai. That game will be at 1:45pm.
