CIF Playoff Journey Continues for Cate Water Polo

Remy Minnis Shines with Eight Goals in 18-13 Victory

Cate vs El Rancho – CIF Rd. 1

Minnis ’24 scores eight goals

Yesterday, October 31st, our Cate boys water polo team hosted a first-round CIF playoff game against El Rancho High School.

We were able to jump out to a big lead and never look back against El Rancho. After falling behind 1-0, we would rattle off six straight goals to give ourselves a commanding lead. Our two-meter play by Remy Minnis ’24 was too much for El Rancho to handle as he would finish the game with a staggering eight goals. It was an offensive masterclass for Minnis. The inside scoring presence he brings puts so much pressure on the opposition, in turn making other Rams rich with assists and finishes of their own.

Baye Breene’s All-Around Performance Lifts Cate Team

Another Ram with a big day was Baye Breene ’25. Breene had five goals on the day and found scoring opportunities in many ways. As one of our premier on-ball defenders, Baye had multiple steals leading to breakaway finishes. He scored on post-ups in front of the cage, man-up opportunities, and outside shots. It was an all-around great game for Breene.

Other Cate goal scorers were Thomas Paige ’24 (2), Phin Stephenson ’25 (2), and Jae Wykoff ’26 (1). Fernando Baldochi ’24 and Andrew Sheshunoff ’27 would combine for double-digit saves from the cage during the match. Ultimately, we would walk away with an 18-13 victory. I was very pleased with the offensive attention to detail and production our guys had. While there were bright spots defensively for us, we still have work to do before Thursday’s second-round game.

Looking ahead, our second-round CIF playoff game will be this Thursday (11/2) against La Quinta HS in Palm Springs, CA. Wish us luck. Go Rams!
