Impressive Wins Propel Rams to Division 5 Finals

The Cate boys’ cross country team won their heat with 41 points and a team time of 1:23.13 to lead all Division 5 qualifying teams. Seniors Sebastian Sutch and Everest Schipper place 2nd and 3rd, running easily behind Eyan Turk of Woodcrest Christian. Freshman Ati Zwieback continues to improve, finishing 8th in 17:04. Seniors Oliver Lee and George Gordon placed 13th and 19th to round out the top 5.

“Seb and Everest ran well and under control, which was the plan,” said Cate coach Tim Weir. ” Ati is really starting to figure out how to race and had a big breakthrough today. Oliver has had some great workouts recently, so we knew he was going to run well. George has been slowed by some injuries of late, and seeing him back up there with Oliver was awesome.”

On the girls’ side, Francesca Sutch led the team as she has done all season. The junior ran comfortably and finished 8th overall. She was followed by junior Stella Rodgers in 33rd place, senior Caroline Keohane in 38th, sophomore Coco Kliman in 39th, and senior Karla Camacho in 67th.

“We couldn’t be more proud of the girls’ team,” said Weir. We lost three of our top five from last year’s state qualifying team to graduation, and we lost another one to a season-ending injury at the start of this season. Fran is the only returner in this group. Stella has really improved throughout the season, running her best race today. She improved her time from the Mt. Sac Invitational by over two minutes. Caroline has been able to stay healthy all year which has also given us a big boost.”
The Rams will run in the Division 5 finals bright and early next Saturday at Mt. Sac. The boys’ race goes off at 7:45 and the girls’ at 8:30.
