It has been an exciting couple weeks on the Mesa with our varsity teams finishing their fall regular season schedule and many already competing in the playoffs. Enjoy these brief summaries, and remember you can read more details on every game here

Strong Performances Propel Boys Water Polo to 2nd place in Tri-Valley League and a Spot in the CIF Playoffs

Cate’s boys water polo team secured a hard-fought victory over Pioneer Valley in overtime, with standout performances from Phin Stephenson ’25 and Sebastian Brine ’26. Despite a slow start, the Rams fought back, ultimately winning 9-7.

The next game featured a dominant defense and standout players, including Christian Busse ’25 and Myles Warren ’24, leading Cate to victory against Villanova Prep. They exhibited exceptional teamwork, winning 12-8.

On October 24, the Rams faced Foothill Tech, securing 2nd place in the Tri-Valley league with a win. Baye Breene ’25’s remarkable performance, along with strong defensive play from the team, led to a 7-3 victory, sealing their spot in CIF.

 

Undefeated Girls Tennis Set Sights on CIF Playoffs

After finishing the regular season play with a perfect 12-0 record and seeded #4 in CIF, they went on to dominate the Tri-Valley League Individuals Tournament, securing First Team All-League honors for all six Cate players in the tournament. The singles final featured an intense battle between undefeated Cate players, with Lisa Hasebe ’27 defeating Alyna Takahashi ’24 to claim the title. In doubles, Cate’s pairs faced formidable opponents, with Colette Chang ’25 and Reyna Takahashi ’27 putting up a spirited fight but ultimately falling to Foothill Tech. However, Sophie Alijani ’24 and Frances Davis ’24 secured the last First Team All-League spot by defeating Laguna Blanca’s top duo. The unbeaten Rams are now set to compete in the CIF D3 Playoffs, aiming to continue their dominance into the postseason.

 

Cate Volleyball Season Highlights: Wins, Playoffs, and Heartfelt Farewells

The girls varsity volleyball team saw its season come to an end after a deep run to the CIF Division 6 Quarterfinals. The Rams began CIF play with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Ocean View, and earned a second round home match, triumphing over Paraclete, 3-0, in Sprague Gym last Saturday, displaying excellent execution and teamwork. Unfortunately, their CIF Division 6 Quarterfinal match against Moorpark ended in defeat despite a commendable effort, with the team showing resilience and determination throughout the season. Coach Jordon Dyer praised the team’s progress and the impact of senior players.

Cate Football Seizes Consecutive Wins in Impressive Fashion

Cate’s football team secured two consecutive victories in impressive fashion. In their first win against Santa Clara, a 59-20 route, the Rams displayed explosive offense with Kristian Scurtis ’24 and Tyler Martinez ’24 making notable contributions, along with solid defensive play marked by five interceptions. The Rams continued their dominance with a 47-6 win over Villanova, with both offense and defense performing exceptionally well. Scurtis and Martinez remained key players, and the depth of the team shined as every player saw action in the game. The Cate defense showcased its strength, contributing to a significant win during Family Weekend celebrations. The team heads into its final regular season game against rival Thacher on Oct. 28 with a sense of accomplishment.

 

Cate Cross Country Shines with Records and Victories

Cate’s cross country team achieved remarkable success in recent meets. At the Mt. Sac event, the boys’ team secured a 9th-place finish in the Individual Sweepstakes race, with standout performances from runners like Sebastian Sutch ’24 and Everest Schipper ’24. They broke records and set a new school team time record of 1:25.06. Francesca Sutch ’25 claimed victory in the junior girls’ race at the Dos Pueblos Invitational with a personal best time of 19:14, while Everest Schipper triumphed in the senior boys’ race with a remarkable time of 15:31, demonstrating exceptional teamwork and personal achievements in both competitions.


Learning Experience: Cate Rams Ultimate Frisbee Season Recap

The Cate Rams Ultimate Frisbee Team concluded their season without a win after facing the Santa Barbara Youth Ultimate Flow and the Dunn Earwigs, but they gained valuable experience and lessons. The team displayed resilience and moments of brilliance throughout the season. Individual highlights included Captain Dilan Lee’s ’24 exceptional defensive contributions, Captain Nyle Ahmad’s ’25 skilled handling, and various improvements by players like Joshua Ludviksen ’25, Harry Su ’25, Christopher Soto ’25, Luke Ashiku ’26, and others. The team’s heart and sportsmanship were commendable, leaving them motivated for future improvements despite this season’s challenges.
