This Week in Athletics

February 17, 2023

Although we are fully underway with spring sports, games have yet to begin. However, it was our winter sports teams that were keeping us entertained with some exciting postseason accomplishments.

The girls basketball team hosted the first round of the CIF-SS playoffs after winning the Frontier League, and their first round opponent came from Pacifica/Garden Grove, a school of nearly 1,700 students. In front of a great home crowd, the girls played with incredible effort and heart. Unfortunately, in the end Pacifica proved to be too much with a little bit more size than the Rams could handle. The Rams had an amazing season that ended the same way it started, with the team playing as one and giving it their all.

The boys basketball team had an incredible run to the quarterfinals before falling to Jordan High School in one of the better basketball games that Cate has been a part of in years. After beating bigger schools in Northview and Santa Ana High School, the team ran into a buzzsaw in Jordan. A very skilled and deep team that played a fast paced game was able to make it difficult on the Rams who were unable keep up til the very end. The boys played with effort and grit all year against very tough competition.

On the soccer field, girls soccer had a fantastic season dominating on the field on their way to winning a league title. After waiting for the wild card round to end to find out their first round opponent, the girls hosted Campbell Hall out of Studio City and played maybe their most complete game of the season winning 3-0. It was a thrilling victory over a very good team that put the Rams into the second round. Unfortunately, that second round game came on the road, very far away, at Hemet High School, the number one seed in the bracket. And as Coach Wyatt said after the game, “they were as deserving of the number one seed as anyone.” Hemet would go on to win that second round matchup 6-0, but by no means was that final score telling of the effort and determination the team played with. The Rams fought to the final whistle and should be incredibly proud of their entire season.

The boys soccer team, just like those above, had a playoff run that kept everyone on the edge of their seats. After making it into the playoffs as a wild card team, the Rams traveled to Daimond Bar High School winning 1-0 and then turned around two days later to travel and play a first round match against Poly/Pasadena. In that game, the boys played spoiler by scoring in the final minutes to send the game to overtime and eventually penalty kicks, where they would prevail 4-1. The second round match may have been one of the most exciting soccer games lower field has seen in quite some time. The number two seed Animo Leadership came to the Mesa, and after 80 minutes of incredible soccer, the Rams were on the wrong side of an unlucky handball that led to the eventual game winning penalty kick. An unfortunate end to an unbelievable game and season.

Congratulations to all of our student-athletes who played with incredible effort, heart, and determination, representing Cate in the best possible ways!
