Cross Country – Mt. SAC Invitational

October 27, 2019

The legendary Mt. SAC course, home to the largest cross country meet in the country, didn’t disappoint today with the famous steep hills, dusty trails, and huge races enhanced with 95 degree temperatures. But both Cate teams were up to the challenge, even if a few of our runners wilted near the finish.

The Lady Rams came into the race ranked third in the section and eighth in the state, and they lived up to their lofty position.  Led by sophomore co-captains Anna DiSorbo and Meena Baher, Cate won their heat convincingly and posted the third best Southern Section D5 time on the afternoon. DiSorbo was third in the race with a time of 19:58, making her the fourth fastest Cate runner ever at Mt SAC. Baher was close behind in fifth place with a time of 20:32, good for ninth all time for Cate.  Fellow sophomore Ella Gardner also medaled by taking 17th in 22:55.  The depth of the Cate team was important today, as the usual #4 and #5 runners struggled in the heat.  Two freshmen, Talia Tom (25th, 23:21) and Lylie Bechtel (29th, 23:33) stepped up to secure the win, and the team time was tenth all time for Cate, a remarkable feat considering the heat.

The boys finished sixth in their heat, a strong performance which was the 15th best all time for a Cate team.  Senior co-captain Tesfa Asmara ran 17:39 for 14th place, making him the 15th fastest Cate boy ever over the storied Mt SAC layout.  Sophomore Nick Patrick was 36th in 18:49, followed by a tight pack of freshman  Caden Fuchs (40th, 18:59), sophomore Peter Wood (41st, 19:02) and freshman Harry McAdam (42d, 19:08).

Next up for the Rams is the Santa Barbara County Championships at River Park in Lompoc next Wednesday.
