Cate Baseball vs Foothill Tech

May 11, 2018

They say that weird things happen on Friday the 13 and that certainly was the case on the Mesa as the Rams battled hard but dropped an extra-innings heartbreaker to Foothill Tech by a 9-8 score. The loss puts Cate at 0-2 in league and 4-3 overall.

After jumping ahead 1-0 in the third inning, Cate made some defensive mistakes that allowed Foothill back in the game and the Dragons took a 3-1 lead in the middle innings. The visitors would add on to their lead and go into the seventh frame leading 5-1. The Rams rallied, scoring four runs in the seventh to tie the game. After Foothill scored three more in the top of the 8th, Cate fought back again to tie the game and pushed the contest into the ninth inning. Foothill marked up for one run in the 9th and although the Rams rallied, they were unable to tie the game up for a third time.
Jack Deardorff ’19 had two hits for Cate including a double, while his brother William ’21 had a single. Cate‘s only other extra base hit came from Daniel Panadero ’21. Dalton Phillips ’20 had a single as did Ethan Cassulo ’21. Patrick Armstrong ’18 and McCarthy Willett ’19 singled for Cate also.
Deardorff ’19 had a great day on the mound for Cate, going 7 and two thirds innings and struck out six. Patrick Armstrong ’18 came in nicely and did a great job of throwing strikes, not walking a single Dragon.
“I’m proud of the way we battled today. We fought hard when our backs were against the wall and we never quit. Unfortunately, we made too many mistakes early on in the game and couldn’t quite recover. If we clean up those little errors and bring good energy for a full game, we have a very bright future,” says Cate coach Dave Soto ’08.
