Girls Varsity Soccer vs Fillmore

January 29, 2018

The Cate girls varsity soccer team defeated a tough Fillmore team 4-2 on Thursday, January 18 to earn its second league victory this week. The win brings Cate’s record in this short season to 2-1. This was a fast-paced and intense game, one that kept the Rams on their toes. Cate scored in the second minute when Isabela Montes de Oca ’18 broke through the Fillmore line to drive a beautiful ball by the outstretched hands of the Fillmore keeper. Fillmore struck back with two goals, one in the fourth minute and a second in the seventh minute twice catching Cate a little flat-footed in the transition from attack to defense. Three goals in seven minutes: a good pace for a soccer game, but fortunately for the Rams, these early minutes were the only productive time for Fillmore. Cate tied the game in the nineteenth minute when Lilly Riehl ’21 put her head on a corner kick from Julia Farner ’18. The “heads up” play and senior-freshman combo put the Rams back in the game and gave them a much-needed boost of energy and confidence going into the second half.

The Cate front line was aggressive and productive for the next 40 minutes and scored just three minutes into the second half when Jolea Moes ’21 connected with classmate Lilly Riehl in a passing combination that beat the Fillmore backfield and keeper. In the 50th minute, the Rams expanded the lead when Neema Mugofwa ’20 sent a beautiful ball across the box that set up Lilly Riehl for the fourth goal, and her hat trick (her second this week). Some tough play on defense by Sophie Johnson ’18, Emily Burns ’18, Maddie Ericsson ’19, Kate Tunnel ’19, Phoebe Hurwitz ’19, and Julia Farner ’18 and several impressive saves from first-year keeper Taylor Kane ’21 kept the Fillmore attack frustrated and scoreless.

“We are very proud of this team and impressed with the high level of play. We’ve had two key injuries this week that we hope will not slow us down,” said Cate Head Coach Lisa Holmes. The Rams will jump back into action on Saturday, January 20 when they host cross-town rival Carpinteria. Start time for that contest will be 1:30.
