The Week in Sports

December 1, 2017

The winter sports season is officially underway as three varsity Rams teams have kicked off the action this week. All of our teams will have games in the coming days, but if the start of the season is any indication for the season, winter will be a bright time for the Rams; the three Cate teams combined for 2-0-1 to start.

Boys varsity basketball tipped off the season with a nice 49-36 win over visiting Garden Street Academy on Wednesday, November 29. Cate was paced by defending league MVP Marko Pliso ’18, who netted his first double double of the season with 19 points and ten rebounds. He had four assists on the night as well. Thomas Nettesheim ’20 helped fill up the stat sheet for the Rams, chipping in four assists, three steals, one block, and five rebounds. The Rams will take on cross-town rival Carpinteria on Tuesday, December 5. Tipoff for that game will be at 5:30 pm.

Like the boys, the girls varsity basketball team also opened up the year with a home win, taking care of Providence 37-28 on Thursday, November 30. Maya Blattberg ’20 led the young Rams team with twelve points. Sarah Polowczak ’19 was huge in the Rams win, scoring four points and collecting eight steals. A host of new Rams including Lily Zanze ’21, Deborah Britton ’21, Jasmine Ross ’21, and Bella Lucente ’21 all saw action in their first ever varsity contest. Cate tips off again on Tuesday, December 5 at 7 pm when they take on Carpinteria High School on the road.

On the pitch, Cate’s boys varsity soccer squad picked up a 1-1 tie against St. Bonaventure High School on Thursday, November 30. The visitors from St. Bonaventure jumped out in front thanks to an early goal, but the Rams weren’t going away easily. In the second half, Buba Fofanah ’20 was taken down in the box leading to a penalty kick goal from Bailor Jalloh ’19. Cate outshot the Seraphs 16-6 on the day thanks to great play on the wing from Jack Deardorff ’19 and stout play in the back from Ben Jessup ’18 and Harry Corman ’20. The Rams will take on Laguna Blanca at Cate on Thursday, December 7 at 3:15 pm.
