Boys Varsity Lacrosse vs Malibu

April 3, 2017

On Tuesday, March  28, the Cate boys varsity lacrosse team travelled to Malibu High School to battle once again for “The Stick”, an old wooden lacrosse stick turned trophy that the two rivals compete for every year. The game was a great success for the Rams ending in 14-3 domination of the Sharks.

The starting attack unit had a great day on the field. Matt Killea ’17 chipped in one goal, Will Bowlin ’18 added three of his own, and Henry Walsh ’17 had one assist for the aggressive Cate offense. “Each guy contributed in many ways throughout the game and have greatly improved their team offense,” said Cate Head Coach Mackie Greason ’11.

The second unit of attack, Peter Firestone ’19, Parker Bowlin ’20 (who had two goals and one assist), and Bryce Jackson ’20, all controlled the offense well and have shown that they are capable of helping this Rams squad down the road. The Cate middies had a field day in between the lines, and dominated the face-off, controlling nineteen out of 21 face-offs. Pierce Lundt ’17 had ten face-off wins and Charlie Heyman ’20 had nine of his own. “The two are a phenomenal tag team at the face and really helped us hold onto the ball,” Greason ’11 noted.

Cate’s long stick middies, Andy McHarg ’18 (seven ground balls) and Owen Jones ’20 had a great day stripping the ball from unsuspecting middies and did a solid job of creating transition offense. The defense was unwavering and relentless against Malibu’s attackmen and middies. Ben Jessup ’18 had two goals and an assist, while Nico Athanassiadis ’18, Noah Meyer ’18, Eric Yi ’18 and Jake Nelson ’19 all played great man ball defense and improved their team defense greatly. They forced countless turnovers and cleared the ball six out of seven times which is a tremendous improvement since the team’s last game.

The Ram goalies had a pretty relaxed day in the cage, but they did a great job communicating and controlling the defense. “Both Chris Figueroa ’17 and Peter Buckley-Armas ’20 are dependable leaders that put in the work to keep improving and definitely set the energy for our team,” Greason ’11 said of his men in the cage.

The Rams will take on another long-time rival on Friday, March 31 when Robert Louis Stevenson comes to town. That game will start at 4:30 p.m.
