Boys Varsity Tennis vs St. Joseph’s

The Cate boys varsity tennis team (16-0) advanced to the second round of CIF Division III with a 13-5 victory over St. Joseph’s (14-5) of Santa Maria on Wednesday, May 10. The Rams started strong, winning the first round 5-1 and then clinched the match in the second round with another 5-1 performance. In the third round, the teams split 3-3.

“I’m really proud of the way we started off today,” Cate Head Coach Jason Saltoun-Ebin commented. “The team is just really excited to start playoffs and we are really proud to have earned the number one overall seed in Division III. We know all the other teams are going to be coming after us with everything they have. These guys fight hard for every point and if they continue to do so it is going to be a really long season.”

Overall, number one singles player Kevin Ha ’17 won his three matches 6-0, 6-0, 6-0. Number two singles Ethan Ha ’20 won his two matches 6-0, 6-0 and then came out in the third round.

Cate won eight of nine doubles sets. Number one doubles Christian Herman ’17 and Joseph Thomasson ’18 teamed up for the first time this season and dropped just three games in their three sets. Number two doubles, Brad Gordon ’19 and Charlie Morris ’18 dropped just two games in their three sets, and number three doubles, Mason Mackall ’17 and Charles Xie ’19 won their first two matches 6-1, 6-1 before falling to St. Joseph’s number one doubles team.

The Rams take on The Webb Schools at 3 p.m. on Friday at Cate.
