Karl received his undergraduate degree in American Studies at Yale and his graduate degree in history at Stanford; he then took a post at the Dalton School in New York City, where he taught history and coached the track team for six years. Since his arrival at Cate in 1990, he has taught a number of different courses in history, including AP US History, and has coached both the boys and the girls cross country teams; he has also served as track coach.
Karl is an experienced runner and cyclist, and continues to train for and participate in dedicated age-group triathlons. He has traveled extensively in Europe, Asia, and Africa.
