Alejandro ’28 warming up for the next inning.

The Cate baseball team advanced to the 2nd round of the CIF Southern Section playoffs with a dramatic, heart stopping 3-2 over Azusa in 9 innings this afternoon.

After the Aztecs got on the board in the 2nd inning, the Rams answered with two runs in the bottom of the third thanks to a 2 RBI single from Chase Meyer ‘26. Azusa tied the game in the top of the 4th and the two sides traded big plays and clutch pitching until Noah Casbarro ‘26 brought home the winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 9th inning.

Casbarro ‘26 and Alejandro Sandoval ‘28 each had two hits for the Rams. Quinn Pullen ‘25, Chase Meyer ‘26, Josh Butler ‘26, and Alex Ke ‘27 all had a hit for Cate.

Peter Lehman ‘25 go the start and was magnificent. The left hander went 7 innings, struck out 5, yielded two unearned runs, and scattered 4 hits. Pullen ‘25 came in and tossed two solid innings of relief for the Rams.

This was an incredible ball game. It was back and forth the entire way and both sides deserved to come away with a win. I’m so proud of the fight our team showed and the heart we displayed all game long. I’ve said just about every game how much fun this team is to be around; it truly showed this afternoon.

The Rams will hit the road and take on La Quinta high school in Westminster on Tuesday.
