Yesterday, September 17th, our Cate boys varsity water polo team hosted Malibu high school for our first league game of the season. The final score of the match was a 6-7 overtime loss for the Rams.
Our top performers on the day were Baye Breene and Jae Wykoff. Baye finished with four of our six goals and led the offensive attack all day. He was dominant all game with the ball in his hand, commanding double teams and still managing to find the back of the net. Jae had an unbelievable ten steal performance. It was a defensive masterclass for the Junior, not allowing any interior offense for Malibu. He would also score a clutch overtime goal for the Rams.
Andrew Sheshunoff ’27 had another great game from the cage. He would finish with eleven saves, including a big penalty stop in the second period. His passing was on point all day, racking up multiple assists.
I was proud of the fight our guys showed in this game. Malibu is the defending Tri Valley league champions for a long time running and we gave them a wire to wire game. Our guys brought a ton of energy to this game and played their hearts out. It was a disappointing way for the game to end but it was an exciting environment to play in and our guys learned a lot about themselves. We will have another chance to take down Malibu in a few weeks at their home pool.
Looking ahead, our next match is next Tuesday, September 24th, at Villanova HS. Go Rams!
