Boys Water Polo
The Cate boys water polo program is on the rise.
Calling the state-of-the-art Emmett Horowitz Aquatic Center home amidst the backdrop of the Los Padres Mountains, there may not be a more inspiring training environment in the area. The location allows the team to challenge each member to be their best in a supportive and instruction-based program.
Boys learn the fundamentals of the game while emphasizing teamwork and camaraderie in an effort to build a strong foundation rooted in consistency, self-discipline, and sportsmanship.
These lessons learned through sport are important and easily applied in the classroom and in life.

Born and raised in Santa Barbara, Jesse Morrison has been a key part of the Cate community since 2021 as the head coach for both boys’ and girls’ varsity water polo teams. A former collegiate athlete at UC Santa Barbara, Jesse played Division I water polo, earning recognition as a four-time Academic All-American and USA Water Polo All-American.
In addition to his work at Cate, Jesse has coached and worked in administration for the Channel Islands United water polo club and co-founded an athletic recruiting business (PCAA) to help high school athletes pursue collegiate athletic opportunities. A three-time Tri-Valley League Coach of the Year (2021, 2022, 2024), he emphasizes mentorship, character development, and relationship building.
Jesse currently plays semi-professional water polo, and also enjoys spending time outdoors and being with family and friends in Santa Barbara.
Renee Mack has served in a variety of roles during her 20+ years at Cate and currently teaches the 9th Grade Seminar as an instructor in the Human Development Department. She is a certified EMT and Athletic Trainer, becoming Cate’s first Athletic Trainer in 2003. She has also taught in the Science Department and worked at Portsmouth Abbey before arriving on the Mesa.
In the summer of 2002, she received a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship to study molecular genetics at Princeton. She has presented on “The Sport and Neuroscience of Building Great Minds” at TABS in both 2019 and 2021.
As the head coach for girls varsity lacrosse, she has led the Rams to two Southern California championships, coached 13 All-Americans, and secured 11 league titles. She lives on campus with her husband, Pete, their three children – Theo ’20, Emmett ’23, and Reagan – and their dog, Rizzo.
