Our Mission

Through commitment, scholarship, companionship, and service, each member of the Cate community contributes to what our founder called “…the spirit of this place… all compounded of beauty and virtue, quiet study, vigorous play, and hard work.”

Commitment: Showing Up for What Matters

Commitment at Cate means hard work centered around care. Students at Cate commit to their learning, their classmates, and their community by showing up, following through, and leaning into challenge because they understand the value of responsibility and the power of perseverance.

Scholarship: Learning with Purpose

Scholarship at Cate invites curiosity grounded in inquiry and depth. Students value challenge over correctness, and questions drive the academic program. Learning is personal and driven by excellence in a variety of settings. Around a Harkness table, in the field conducting real-world research, or presenting a thought-provoking capstone inquiry project in their senior year, Cate students learn, grow, and question with purpose.

Companionship: Belonging to Something Bigger

Companionship binds the Cate community together and exudes from every corner of the Mesa. Relationships at Cate matter, and students and faculty live, learn, and work together, creating a sense of interconnectedness that forges lifelong bonds. Students at Cate care about one another, celebrate victories large and small, and hold each other accountable because they know that this community is better together.

Service: Empathy in Action

Servons is the Cate School motto, and it means “let us serve.” This is how each student here leads – with meaning and purpose.  From helping a neighbor with a tough homework assignment to leading an initiative in the local community that has a lasting impact, Cate students step up, driven by an authentic desire to contribute and make things better.

More than a century of tradition

Cate School combines the academic rigor of East Coast prep schools with the adventurous spirit of the West Coast. This was the vision of founder Curtis Wolsey Cate, a graduate of Roxbury Latin School and Harvard University, who crossed the country to start Cate School in 1910. With a cultural foundation steeped in history and an innovative approach to residential academics, Cate has evolved from a small school of 12 boys to a vibrant, multicultural community with an eye for the future.

We do college counseling differently

Starting in 11th grade, every student participates in Cate’s world-class College Counseling program, an industry-leading process that pairs data-driven insight with meaningful self-reflection. At Cate, each student is known, supported, and challenged to discover their voice and, through this process, create a path that reflects their values and aspirations. Counselors integrate anti-racist practices that help students see how bias can influence admissions and give them the tools to approach the process with awareness and confidence.

Consistent, timely communication with students, families, faculty, and trustees keeps everyone aligned and engaged. This comprehensive, personal approach empowers students to navigate their college search with purpose and step into the future ready and well-prepared.
