On Thursday, April 2nd, Cate School held its first home track meet since 2013, a dual meet against rival Thacher School. Athletic Director Wade Ransom was pleased to see that the new Whiting Family Track at Meldman Field was in use against cross-town rivals Carpinteria.
“It has been a while since we have had the opportunity to host a home track meet. What makes this meet even more significant is that we were able to host Carpinteria High School. Carp has been a great neighbor to Cate for years and has hosted us many times for small meets, the Russell Cup, and the CIF-SS Prelims. It felt wonderful to host them at our place for the first home meet since 2013.”
Head Track Coach Kyle Mason added, “Coach Van Latham and his staff are truly great coaches and neighbors. Their program is talented and well coached, and we were happy to host them this afternoon for a competitive and friendly meet.”
Each team saw its share of personal records and first-place finishers. For the Warriors, Leighla Richter won the 100-meter hurdles, and Issac Sanchez won both the 110-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles. Jaxon Gentzel was second in both races. Katia Nikolov won the 400-meter dash, and Marely Avalos won both the shot put and the discus.
The Rams had several athletes who won multiple events. Sophie Blank won the 800 meters and the 1600 meters and ran the lead-off leg on the winning 4×400-meter relay. Ati Zwieback also won the 800 and 1600, and ran a leg on the winning 4×400-meter relay. Sloan Harwell won the 100, 200, and anchored the winning 4×100-meter relay and the 4×400-meter relay. Jackson Steele won the 400 meters and the 200 meters, and anchored the winning boys’ 4×400-meter relay. Other event winners from Cate were Gwen McTigue in the 300-meter hurdles and Nika Iverson in the long jump.
The Warriors and Rams will see each other again in the Russell Cup on April 18th.
