GVS Triumphs Over Foothill Tech

Cate GVS 2 – 1 Foothill Tech

That was a real win.  An earned win.  A full team win.  And a long 80 minutes.  We had the most beautiful opening play, passing around the tall Foothill team to start the game.  An early cross from Harper put Precious right in front of the net with the ball.  Goal.  So reassuring, so classy.  The game felt under control for the rest of the first half, with plenty of attacks by the blue team and no defensive emergencies.  In the second half we worked to contain their midfield superstar (#13) and Sierra Montoya stepped up again, marking her with tenacity.  It was going well.  We focused on “stacking our spine” up the middle and that went well too, especially when Claire Chan collected a ball near our own 18 and played a lofted through ball for a Precious breakaway.  We were up 2-0.  In the last 20 minutes, however, Foothill put their biggest, strongest, and fastest up top.  At this point, we were feeling the heat and exhaustion of 60 minutes in the sun and all of a sudden we were under serious defensive attacks, one after another.  The style was kick-and-run, which was plenty effective.  And maybe I should call it, kick-crash-and-run.  I’m so impressed by everyone’s physical and mental effort today, but particularly our defense: Lauren Hubbs, Coco Kliman, Analise Gomez, and Tania Molina.  They gave absolutely everything they had.  They tackled and recovered again and again, which must have felt like the continual putting out of fires.  Our midfield came back to support.  We ran ourselves ragged and held off what felt like an onslaught of shots for so long, but eventually one did go in with 4 minutes left to play.  Fortunately, that reset things and actually allowed for a calmer finish to the game, but we sure were excited to hear the whistle. Perhaps even more exciting? This win likely just earned us a spot in the CIF playoffs!  And so we got to celebrate our seniors while feeling full of gratitude and joy. Thank you to the juniors for putting together a special ceremony.  Wonderful.
