GVBB Building a Winning Run

January 23, 2026

Cate: 6+1+17+ 8 = 30
Laguna Blanca: 4+ 7+ 5+ 2= 18

The Cate girls basketball team battled through adversity on the road against Laguna Blanca and earned a hard-fought win, responding to a difficult first half with a tenacious, heartfelt second half. We came out understandably nervous, adjusting to suboptimal court conditions and a packed home crowd, and fell behind early by a few—though it felt like more given the energy in the gym. What never wavered, however, was our fight.

Our third quarter was stellar. A relentless full-court press sparked momentum and led to key offensive contributions across the lineup. Maree Hawkins finished with 10 points, capped by an incredible full-court shot at the end of the third quarter to extend our lead to double digits at a pivotal point in the game.

Defensively, we were locked in, holding the Owls to just seven total points in the entire second half. Chelsea Newlove was once again exceptional, face-guarding Laguna Blanca’s best player for 29 out of 32 game minutes. Her heart, effort, and commitment on defense continue to set the tone for our team, and her teammates follow her lead. Senior Jasper Shelmerdine contributed 8 steals, numerous deflections, and jump ball opportunities for us!

We saw strong offensive performances from seniors Emerson Evans, Mai Holmes, and Shelmerdine, who stepped up with poise and confidence when it mattered most.

Cate GVBB: 13+ 16+ 15+ 14 = 60
Dunn: 6+ 4+ 9+ 14 = 33

The Cate girls varsity basketball team put together their most complete all-around performance of the season on Friday night (Jan. 16th), earning a convincing 60–33 win over Dunn.

Senior Emerson Evans led the way with 17 points and 8 rebounds, setting the tone on both ends of the floor. The night was also defined by our remarkable offensive balance: nine different Rams scored, highlighting the team’s unselfish play and depth. Sloan Harwell added 8 points, while Chelsea Newlove, Alice Zhang, and Jasper Shelmerdine each contributed 6 points apiece.

The win moves Cate into sole possession of second place in the Frontier League. We will face Dunn again next Tuesday in our final league game, with playoff positioning to be determined after that matchup.
