Cate GVS 1 – 1 Carpinteria HS
Saves: Mimi Power (9)
Assist: Fiona Pan
Goal: Precious Adjei (37 min)
Our team really rose to the challenge today. The Carp High team was good – they had good passing, they had really good speed – and we were depleted every which way. The result could have been very different, but this GVS group has depths and depths of physical and mental resilience. They played out of position, they played through some pain, through plenty of discomfort from illness, and pulled off a tie. It was not our prettiest game possession wise, but it might have been our prettiest in terms of defensive shape. Lauren Hubbs was our anchor and our leader in the center back position, allowing Coco Kliman to feel ever more comfortable and impressive in her decisions to step up and make tackles. Tania Molina and Sierra Motoya played the outside back positions, each making at least a dozen essential stops, and then connecting with our midfield. Speaking of that midfield, Fiona Pan sent one of her arcing long balls up to Precious Adjei in the 37th minute, catching Precious up high. Precious was able to beat two defenders and the keeper, slotting the ball into the back of the net, and finally getting that goal she’s worked so hard for this season. On the other side of the field, Mimi Power had another incredible game in the net, stopping every shot in her reach with complete composure. With such a strain on our roster, I’m feeling grateful for our newer, younger players being so willing to step in where needed. Alaia Muller, Maya Pinto, Valentina Selmoni, and Piper Hartigan were really important to us today in support of Nika and Violet’s strong offensive efforts. We are getting the opportunity to grow in real time, and absolutely taking advantage of it. What a result. Next week we have yet another home game, this one against Grace School (formerly Grace Brethren) from Simi Valley. Hope to see you there for a 3pm kickoff. Thanks for following along this week!
