Coach’s Take

The Cate Rams battled to the final whistle in a tightly contested league matchup against Flintridge Prep, last year’s defending CIF 8-Man Division I champions.

Cate stumbled out of the gate, surrendering an early safety, but the Rams quickly responded behind quarterback Sam Lambiotte (27). Lambiotte rushed for one touchdown and connected with Dax Schoor (27) for another, helping Cate take a 12-9 lead.

The Rams’ defense continued to frustrate Flintridge throughout the game, led by William Murray (27), who recorded two interceptions to help preserve a 19-9 Cate advantage. The Rams continued to compete on both sides of the ball and carried a lead into the fourth quarter.

Flintridge, however, mounted a late comeback. A touchdown in the closing stages gave the Wolves a 26-25 advantage. Cate continued to fight and went for it on fourth down in an effort to regain the lead, but the Rams were unable to convert. Taking over with favorable field position, Flintridge added one final touchdown in the closing seconds to produce the 33-25 final score.

Despite the loss, Cate showed its ability to compete with one of the top programs in 8-man football and remained in position to win until the final moments.

Coach Soto had this to say following the game: “I really love the effort this young team is putting out –  I appreciate the hours on and off the field that my Coaches are putting in.  We are a few plays away from being 4 – 1 (but that is football) – I know that we will work to fix what needs to be fixed to be able to play Cate Football for 4 Quarters.”

Next up, the Rams return home to face first-place Sage Hill during Parents Weekend. Cate will look to build on a hard-fought performance as the Rams welcome families back to campus for another important league matchup.
