The Cate Swim Team had a strong showing at the CIF Southern Section Prelims. In the girls’ Division 2 meet yesterday, Emi Kanda-Gleeson ‘27 qualified for Friday’s finals in two events. Her times of 2:14.68 in the 200 individual medley and 1:00.11 in the 100 backstroke were both new school records, breaking her own marks.
The medley relay of Kanda-Gleeson, Sofia Wang ‘28, Jen Won ‘26 and Tori Kim ‘27 also advanced to finals, qualifying 18th.
Won was 28th in the 50 freestyle, and 19th in the 100 butterfly to earn a position as the first alternate for Friday’s final.
The 200 Freestyle Relay of Kim, Makayla Niu ’27, Wang and Maddie Kollock ’27 and the 400 Freestyle Relay of Won, Kollock, Kim and Kanda-Gleeson also had strong swims and put up season-best times for Cate.
The boys competed in the Division 1 preliminaries this morning, breaking school records in four events.
Josiah Hansen ’27 also advanced to finals in two individual events. In the 100 butterfly he set a new school record time of 50.50. And in the 100 backstroke he posted a new standard of 51.81. He will compete again on Saturday in both events.
The medley relay team of Hansen, Devon Liang ’27, Wil Rivera ’27 and Jae Wykoff ‘26 lowered the school record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:37.95. And Hansen, Rivera, Elliott Paige ’26 and Wykoff set a new mark of 3:14.63 in the 400 freestyle relay.
This is among the fastest high school swim meets in the country, with an exceptionally high level of swimming. Our swimmers have risen to the challenge the last two days and look forward to more.
