Cate’s spring athletics continues the impressive season as tennis, swim, track and field, boys lacrosse, and girls lacrosse head into the playoffs.
The Rams headed down the hill to Carpinteria HS to compete in the Russel Cup. Junior Miles Thompson and Senior Josh Butler set personal records, PRs, in both the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash. Ryan Chen set a PR in the Triple Jump. Five Sophomores set PR’s at the meet. Sloan Harwell in the 200-meter dash, Aggie McTigue and Ivy Huang in the 1600-meter run, Harper Bishop in the 300-meter hurdles and the high jump, and Cam A Bitang in the Shot Put and Discus.
The 4×800 meter relay traveled to compete at Mt. SAC Relay. The team of Junior Ati Zwieback, Sophomore Ethan Qui, Junior Jackson Steele, and Senior Jordan Ryan lowered their previous best time of 8:40 to 8:18. The new time is a school record and the number two time in the CIF-Southern Section Division 4.
Next up for the Rams was the Santa Barbara County Meet in Santa Maria during Family Weekend. Sophomore Sloan Harwell, who won the Varsity 200-meter dash to become the SB County Champion! Her time of 25.46 is just off the school record held by Kennedy Kirkland. The team competes for the TCAA League Championship on Friday, May 1st, at Ventura College.
SwimCate swim continued its tremendous season at the Foothill Tech Invitational before hosting Dunn, Laguna Blanca, and St. Bonaventure in the final home meet of the season. Against Foothill Tech, the Rams claimed top spot out of the seven teams for both the girls and boys teams. Emi Kanda-Gleeson finished first and set new Cate School records in the 100 butterfly (1:00.01) and 100 breaststroke (1:10.97), the latter besting Sophia Soriano’s 12-year-old standard.
In their final home meet, the Rams sent their seniors off in style with a resounding victory. One of the many highlights was co-captain Elliott Paige ‘26, winning four events on the day. He took first in the 200 and 500 freestyles with times of 1:51.94 and 5:04.29 respectively while anchoring Cate’s winning 200 and 400 freestyle relays.
The team competed at the Tri Valley League Championships on Wednesday.
Boys tennis finished their season as league champions with 7-0 record in the league. The team was 11-0 after their 16-2 victory over Carpinteria HS. The Rams hosted the talented Oak Park who dealt the Rams their first loss (12-6) of the season. In the Tri Valley League Championships, Cate took doubles victory with duo James He and Kenny Wang, while Kakeru Hirofuji took silver in the individuals. This has been a remarkable and talented squad to watch this season. Several players will look to continue their fine season as they head into the Cate Juniors WTN Tournament this weekend.
Girls Lacrosse finished out their league season with convincing wins over Santa Barbara HS and Thacher. The Rams welcome MLK High to the Mesa in the first round of playoffs. The Rams came out on top with 12-8 win with their most complete performance of the season. Round 2 sent the Rams on a long journey to Temecula on Thursday to compete against Great Oak High. The Rams fought right to the very end in the tight affair, but the playoff run came to an end with a 6-5 defeat.

The boys’ lacrosse team is finding its rhythm in the knick of time. Heading into the final league game of the season, it was a must win game at home against Thacher. The Rams put together an incredible second period where they took a commanding lead and ran out 6-4 winners over the Toads. The following day, they headed to Ojai in a rematch for an play in berth to playoffs. Again, the Rams put together a complete performance that culminated in an 8-4 victory over the Toads. The Rams are using this end of season momentum as they head into playoffs. With the first round of playoffs tied 4-4 with 10 seconds to go, the Rams won a ground ball which was converted with 1 second left by senior Quincy Thorne. The Rams are thriving on the elimination pressure and look to keep it the season rolling as they host the next playoff round on Friday, May 1st.
With 3 wins on the bounce against Providence (3-2), Dunn (3-0), and Del Sol (3-1), the boys volleyball team put themselves on the cusp of playoff volleyball. The final match of the season against Providence was a must win. Unfortunately, Providence played quality volleyball and ran out 3-1 winners on the night. It was an impressive end to the season for this Rams squad who should take pride in the final push that brought them close to a playoff berth.
BaseballAfter tough games in the first half of the season, Cate baseball started to improve their performances throughout the season. Wins were still elusive, but the games were narrow loses to Thacher and Nordhoff (11-7 and 8-5 respectively). The breakthrough came against Valley Christian where the team put a in quality performance both defensively and offensively in a 17-3 victory. The Rams look to make it 2 on the bounce as they face Ojai Valley on Monday to close out the season.
