This Week in Athletics

Spring athletics are in full swing as the Rams continue to compete across the board. From a historic home track meet to dominant performances in the pool and on the courts, Cate athletes are making significant strides as we move into the heart of the season.

Track and Field

On Thursday, April 2nd, Cate School held its first home track meet since 2013, hosting Carpinteria High School on the new Whiting Family Track at Meldman Field. Athletic Director Wade Ransom and Head Coach Kyle Mason noted the significance of the event and the strong competitive relationship with the Warriors. Several Rams were multi-event winners: Sloan Harwell ’27 won the 100m and 200m and anchored the winning 4x100m and 4x400m relays. Sophie Blank ’27 won the 800m and 1600m and led off the winning 4x400m. Ati Zwieback ’26 swept the boys’ 800m and 1600m, while Jackson Steele ’26 won the 400m and 200m and anchored the winning 4x400m relay. In field events, Ryan Chen ’26 won the Triple Jump and Long Jump and placed second in the High Jump. Other individual victories came from Gwen McTigue (300m hurdles) and Nika Iverson (Long Jump). The Rams face the Warriors again at the Russell Cup on April 18th.

Double event winners included Tori Kim ’27, Emi Kanda-Gleeson ’27, Wil Rivera ’27, and Mo Kanda-Gleeson ‘26. The Rams compete at the Tri-County Invitational at San Marcos on Thursday.

Boys Tennis

Boys Tennis remains undefeated following three more victories this week. The Rams secured a close 10-8 win over Camarillo, followed by a dominant 15-3 result against Thacher. They finished the week with an 11-7 win over San Marcos. The team continues to show great depth as they maintain their perfect start to the season.

Girls Lacrosse

The girls’ lacrosse team secured a decisive 15-4 victory over Santa Barbara High School. Following a strong performance against Thacher, the Rams controlled the game against the Dons from the start. The team looks to maintain this momentum heading into their return fixture against Thacher and upcoming matches against Santa Barbara.

Boys Volleyball

Rams Volleyball had a perfect week, starting with a 3-0 sweep of Dunn. They followed this with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Laguna Blanca, showing great composure to win the deciding fifth set. The team is finding its rhythm as they move deeper into the league schedule.

Boys Lacrosse

The boys’ lacrosse team faced a difficult opponent this week, falling 16-0 to Santa Barbara High School. The Rams are now focused on upcoming league play, with critical games against Thacher and San Marcos on the schedule as they work to secure a playoff berth.

Baseball

The baseball team dropped two games to St. Bonaventure this week. In the first matchup, the Rams fell 15-1, followed by a 5-0 loss in the second game. While the defense improved in the latter contest, the team is looking to find more consistency at the plate as they prepare for their next series of games.
