Tennis Stays Undefeated Against Camarillo

April 6, 2026

Season record: 7-0 (5-0 league)

Today, your Cate School Boys Varsity Tennis team faced the Camarillo Scorpions at home in a tough non-league matchup. This was by far both the hardest and the closest match we’ve played this season. The weather was gloomy; the rain was tantalizing, yet your Rams mustered up the strength to continue their undefeated season. The scorpions were the only loss in an otherwise perfect season last year, and the team was hungry for revenge.
Our starting lineup was composed of Kakeru Hirofuji ’27, Bruce Li ’28, and Alex Danely ’28 in singles, and three doubles pairings of James He ’27/Kenneth Wang ’27, Kendrick Suen ’28/Kaden Greene ’27, and Graham Clinger ’26/Andrew Jayich ’28, at one, two, and three respectively. This was the first time the Jayich/Clinger duo played together this season.
In singles, Hirofuji was undefeated, winning his sets 6-2, 6-1, 6-1 against tough opponents. In a similar fashion, Li won two sets, going 6-1, 6-2, 2-6. Danely was able to chip away at his opponents to great effect, forcing them to make difficult shots to get past him, with three close sets to test his endurance.
On the doubles end, He/Wang rebounded from an onerous first set against a strong Camarillo pair to take their next two, going 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 for two sets. Clinger/Jayich was the reverse, winning their first two sets 6-2, 6-2, before falling to the same doubles one team in an arduous battle. Finally, Greene/Suen withstood the opposing torrents to take a set 6-4.
Camarillo was a very strong opponent, but your Rams continue to prevail. The sprinkles of rain and Camarillo’s best efforts were not enough to cause any stumble in our vigorous march to victory. Our next match is a home game against Thatcher on Thursday.
