Cate 9 Sequoia 8
After a hard-fought battle that went down to the wire, Cate pulled out a thrilling 10-9 victory in overtime against Sequoia today. Sequoia came out strong in the first quarter, jumping ahead to a 3-2 lead, but Cate remained composed and focused on the fundamentals. We were able to settle in during the second quarter, tightening our communication and taking a 6-5 lead into the half. With less than a minute to play in the half, Claire Bianchi was the game charger when she stole a ground ball and ran full field to score. She then scored off a scrappy ball with 3 seconds left. Her hard-work and pure determination set the team in motion for the second half.
By the end of the third quarter, Cate had extended the lead to 7-4, but Sequoia refused to go away, fighting back in the fourth to tie the game and force overtime. In the extra period, Lauren Hubbs stepped up in a huge moment, finding the back of the net to score the winning goal and end the game. Our defense, Lorelei Roof, Maree Hawkins, Maia Holmes, Amelia Riepe, played with incredible discipline and coordination throughout the contest, making it difficult for Sequoia to find clean looks inside the 8m. Sofi Ridgeway, Fiona Pan and Harper Halbardier were outstanding on attack today. Their decision and patience was outstanding. In net, Chelsea Newlove was outstanding, recording 9 impressive saves and 4 brilliant goalie clears that triggered our transition game.I am so proud of the grit and heart this team showed today.
