Cate 16 Santa Barbara 2
It was a celebration of leadership on the Meldman Field, as the girls’ lacrosse team honored its seniors with a commanding 16-2 victory over Santa Barbara. In the opening quarter, the Rams struggled to find the back of the net. And, Cate held a modest 2-0 lead. However, the floodgates opened in the second quarter. Led by a relentless senior class, the Rams exploded for 10 goals, effectively putting the game out of reach by halftime with a 12-1 advantage. The Rams’ dominance was rooted in their control of the center circle again with Carmen, Lauren and Posie, winning 15 of 19 draws to maintain a suffocating possession advantage. Defensively, the Rams were nearly impenetrable- thanks to the strong communication from Lorelei Roof, Amelia Riepe and Maree Hawkins. Goalkeeper Chelsea Newlove anchored the backline, and the defensive unit limited Santa Barbara to just two goals across four quarters of play. After the early jitters of the first quarter, the Rams played nearly flawless lacrosse, finishing the third quarter up 14-2 before cruising to the 16-2 final.
The scoring effort was remarkably balanced, showcasing the depth of the Cate roster:
