Cate Athletics Winter Recap
Cate had another tremendous winter sports season. To start, the girls’ soccer team is still making a run at a CIF-SS D7 championship. After finishing the regular season 6-5-3, they hosted a first-round matchup against Pioneer High School and won 4-0. That set up another home game in the second round against Desert Christian Academy, which they won 3-0 to advance to the quarterfinals. They travel to Santa Rosa Academy this Wednesday.
The boys’ soccer team had another excellent year. They finished the regular season 11-1 overall and a perfect 8-0 in league, earning a spot in the CIF-SS D6 playoffs. After a 5-2 win over Colton High School, they traveled to Calabasas for a second-round matchup with Viewpoint High School, where a 3-1 loss ended their season. After the game, Coach Jorge Reynoso announced he is stepping down after five years leading the program. Thank you, Jorge, for everything you gave to our student athletes.
Girls’ basketball rounded out the winter programs that qualified for the postseason. They won five of their last six regular-season games to earn a spot in the CIF-SS D9 playoffs, then carried that momentum into a first-round matchup with La Sierra High School. In a back-and-forth game in front of a loud Sprague Gym crowd, the girls played a terrific game before falling 35-37.
Boys’ basketball showed flashes of a bright future this season. A deep football playoff run in the fall left some key players unavailable early on, and injuries to others further disrupted the lineup. The silver lining was the opportunity it created for younger players, with two ninth-graders finishing the year in the starting lineup. The season highlight was a seven-point home win over rival Thacher in front of a packed crowd.
Girls’ water polo began laying the foundation of its culture this season. After graduating key seniors last year, new players stepped into bigger roles and rose to the challenge. Highlights included competing in the team’s first tournament in over five seasons and picking up wins over Channel Islands and Del Sol High School. This is a young group with promising years ahead.
Surf seasons typically hinge on one thing: the surf. The swell was pretty consistent, and that allowed the students to really progress over the course of the Winter. Everyone should be proud of the progress they have made in a truly difficult sport. Highlights of the season included competing in two local events, one in Ventura and one at world-famous Rincon Beach.
