Girls Water Polo Cate vs Malibu & Foothill Tech

Last week, we concluded our girls’ varsity water polo season after two tough losses at Malibu High and Foothill Tech. Both games presented challenges, as we were shorthanded due to the MUN trip, and faced off against the top two teams in our league. The first match was against a stacked Malibu squad. I was pleased with the defensive improvement and greater attention to detail over the course of four quarters. Carmen Lack was the defensive anchor for us, tallying multiple takeaways and leading our group on that end of the pool. Ellie Walmsley stepped up in the cage, blocking a penalty shot and tallying five other big blocks. While we had plenty of opportunities in this one, we weren’t able to find the back of the net. Stifling defense and excellent goalkeeping by Malibu kept us out of the scoring column.

Our next game against Foothill was a different story. Sydney Brass got us going offensively, scoring a penalty shot after a terrific lead pass from Michelle Wu. Betsy Peters, Amber Lam, and Madeline Losey all contributed goals for us offensively. Losey scored on the last possession of the game with a beautiful roll-out shot from two meters, a nice way to cap off her Cate water polo career. Chloe Chen had a career-high six takeaways during the game. She was flying around the pool, making several key defensive plays. Despite both games being losses, I was proud of how our girls stayed focused, resilient, and determined throughout. We never lost sight of our goals despite what the scoreboard indicated.

I want to thank the entire Cate community for their support of our girls’ water polo program this Winter season. Showing up and cheering our team on means a lot to both our players and coaches. These girls trained and played hard, never backed down from a challenge, and positively represented our school. I’d also like to thank our seniors, Madeline Losey, Chloe Chen, and Carmen Lack. As mentioned on senior day, your effort and commitment to our program over the last four years will leave a lasting legacy for future Cate water polo players. Hope to see you all next winter. Go Rams!
