Cate: 10+8+9+4=31
Dunn: 8+8+4+2= 22
The Cate girls’ basketball team traveled to Dunn for their final Frontier League game, with second place and playoff seeding on the line. After an 11-day layoff, the Rams showed some early rust but quickly found their rhythm behind the leadership of their seniors.
Senior Emerson Evans led all scorers with 15 of our 31 points, fellow senior Maia Holmes delivered an all-time defensive performance face-guarding Dunn’s leading scorer, and senior Jasper Shelmerdine set the tone with relentless hustle, pulling down six offensive rebounds, forcing five jump balls, tallying four deflections, and coming away with five steals.
Dunn opened the game pushing tempo, scoring quickly as we adjusted back to game speed. They received balanced contributions from three starters, while Evans carried us offensively in the first quarter with eight of our 10 points. We led 10–8 after one.
In the second, Sophomores Chelsea Newlove and Sloan Harwell, as well as freshman Alice Zhang provided important minutes, alongside strong play from Shelmerdine and Holmes. Dunn’s top scorer had 10 of her team-high 12 points in the first half.
The third quarter proved to be the turning point. Newlove knocked down a key three, Evans continued to score, and Holmes’ relentless defense completely disrupted Dunn’s offensive flow. Holmes’ effort and athleticism were phenomenal, helping us build a 27–20 lead heading into the fourth.
Our defense never let Dunn back into the game as they were held scoreless from the floor over the final eight minutes. Junior Aleema Bowo and Shelmerdine added strong transition drives, and it was great to see everyone get into the game as we closed out league play with a gritty, if sometimes messy, win.
We generated plenty of offensive opportunities through our rebounding, and finishing those chances will be key as we move into the playoffs. Still, after a long break, this was an important and hard-earned victory.
We’ll learn our playoff matchup on Sunday, with the first round beginning February 12.
