Cate GVS 5 – 1 Santa Rosa Academy (Menifee)
Saves: Mimi Power (6)
Assists: Claire Bianchi, Nika Iverson, Fiona Pan, Harper Bishop
Goals: Harper Bishop (3rd min, 7th, 30th), Fiona Pan (14th), Precious Adjei (16th)
Well, that was a delightful opening 16 minutes: Harper with the hat trick, Fiona with the Olimpico*, and Precious with the dribbling clinic. In the first half of the first half, the goals just kept coming. We were focused, we were playing on a fast turf surface, we were applying high pressure, and the wind was with us. That’s not to say that the Santa Rosa Rangers had nothing to say in return. They were speedy and direct, but fortunately their passes went too far out in front of their forwards and Mimi was always there to scoop them up. The second half began and our objective was to complete passes under pressure. It took us a good ten minutes to settle the ball down, but Precious Adjei and Fiona Pan led that effort, each tallying over 15 completed passes, with Nika Iverson and Violet Guilbert-Neal close behind. The game got chippier as the clock wore on. Chippy, in fact, might be an understatement and we can understand the frustration the Rangers must have been feeling at this point in their season, but still wish things had turned out differently. We absorbed some blows, weathered some frightening tackles, a few players took breaks on the sideline to make sure they could still walk, and through it all our defenders were the model of composure: Lauren Hubbs, Sierra Montoya, Tania Molina, Analise Gomez, and Amelia Riepe played clean and hard. In the literal last minute, Santa Rosa put a cross in front of the frame, an uncontested tap in, and then the whistle blew. Such an odd finish, but we were so excited to celebrate this quarterfinal win (perhaps the first quarterfinal GVS win in the last 20 years). Next, we are off to Azusa for the semifinals and will play on Saturday at 2pm. Azusa High School is just 20 minutes past Pasadena on the 210, so come make a day of it and help Cate Ewenited get to the CIF Finals!
