Cate GVS 0 – 1 Foothill Tech

Goalkeepers: Mimi Power and Kirra Tanaka

A quick write-up between classes this time after a late night game in Ventura against Foothill Tech.  We played under the lights against a competitive opponent and were really evenly matched – a lot of talent on both sides of the ball.  Foothill scored early off a corner-kick-plus-header combination where we were not marked up height for height.  That was a blow and we hung our heads a bit in frustration.  Fortunately, our goalkeeper, Mimi Power, was as focused as ever and made an incredible arching save on their next attempt to make us proud and reorient our attention.  From then on it was an even game with each team getting their chances.  Cate, however, had the stronger second half (I say with my biased perspective on things).  There were some memorable strands of 5+ passes put together where the team swung the ball across the field like a game of high pressure short-short-long.  Our girls in white were first to almost every ball in space, closing down the big field and earning possession with a show of both strength and competence.  By building out of the back and out of the midfield, we were able to play clever forward passes to Violet, Precious, and Harper, especially in the final 20 minutes.  It was an exciting finish with a literal last minute scoring opportunity that didn’t go our way, but the build up was there and the build up is the hard part, especially on tired legs. We finished proud of our effort once again, but disappointed by the result.  We’re off to Thacher tomorrow and eager to get a win!
