On a beautiful and toasty afternoon on the Mesa, your Cate Rams hosted small-school rivals, the Dunn Earwigs.
The starting lineup was nearly identical to Tuesday’s starting eleven, with sophomore goalkeeper Alejandro Sandoval in goal. The defensive back line was anchored by seniors Charlie Dorion, Kamil Abdul-Nafeo, and Alex Gallegos, along with sophomore Nicolas Wright De la Cal. The midfield trio consisted of seniors Quincy Thorne and Dimash Anuarbek, alongside freshman Alden Rosenfield. Leading the attack were seniors George Marin and Kiy Barry, joined by junior Teke Meisel.
The Rams came out firing on all cylinders from the opening whistle, creating several scoring chances in the first few minutes but unable to convert during the opening 10 minutes. In the 11th minute, George Marin opened the scoring, finishing a pass from Kamil Abdul-Nafeo to give Cate a 1–0 lead. Three minutes later, Kiy Barry doubled the advantage after Marin stole the ball from a Dunn defender and calmly set up Barry for the finish.
In the 16th minute, Abdul-Nafeo continued the pressure, dispossessing the Dunn center back and slotting a 15-yard shot into the net to make it 3–0. The visitors attempted to get back into the match, but the Rams’ team defense shut down every opportunity. In the 35th minute, Marin once again connected with Barry, delivering a selfless pass that Barry hammered off the crossbar and into the net, giving Cate a commanding 4–0 lead at halftime.
The second half began with the Rams refusing to take their foot off the gas pedal. Just two minutes in, Charlie Dorion made an impressive run from his defensive position, reached the top of the 18-yard box, and fired a shot off the left post and into the net to extend the lead to 5–0. Cate controlled possession and dictated the pace, while the defense remained focused on preserving the clean sheet.
Senior Oliver Charvel made an immediate impact off the bench in the 65th minute, delivering a gorgeous cross from the right flank that Marin headed home for his second goal of the match. Just before the final whistle, Alden Rosenfield sent a corner kick into the box, and junior Nolan Montoya rose to head it into the back of the net, sealing a dominant 7–0 victory.
Overall, the Rams delivered a much-improved performance, controlling all aspects of the match. Their passing, possession, and defensive effort were nearly flawless. Strong contributions came from Miles Thompson, Oliver Charvel, Nathan Koh, Aydin Barry, Jordan Ryan, and Shirdon Nouh. Dunn features a dangerous attacking threat, and Cate’s “onion defense”—defending in layers with depth—proved highly effective.
The Rams will wrap up their three-game homestand next Tuesday when they host Foothill Tech at 3:00 p.m. on Meldman Field. We hope to see you there
