Playing their first game of 2026 after a month-long layoff, your Cate Rams opened a stretch of three consecutive home matches on a beautiful afternoon at Meldman Field, hosting the Bishop Diego Cardinals.
Today’s starting eleven featured sophomore goalkeeper Alejandro Sandoval in goal. The defensive backline was anchored by seniors Charlie Dorion, Kamil Abdul-Nafeo, and Alex Gallegos, along with sophomore Nicolas Wright De la Cal. The midfield trio consisted of seniors Quincy Thorne and Dimash Anuarbek, alongside freshman Alden Rosenfield. Leading the attack were juniors Teke Meisel and Nolan Montoya, joined by senior George Marin.
The match got off to a fast and energetic start, with both teams eager to set the tone and strike first. Bishop Diego opened the scoring in the 3rd minute, collecting a loose ball and converting to take an early 1–0 lead. The Rams responded quickly, leveling the score in the 8th minute when Teke headed home a corner kick delivered by George.
Just one minute later, Teke struck again, rising to meet a beautiful cross from Kamil and heading it into the back of the net to give Cate a 2–1 lead and swing the momentum firmly in the Rams’ favor. Cate continued to press, creating chance after chance, hitting the crossbar twice and forcing the Bishop Diego goalkeeper into several strong saves.
In the 20th minute, the Cardinals capitalized on an error and equalized to make it 2–2. Once again, the Rams answered immediately. In the 22nd minute, Quincy restored the lead with a composed finish off an outstanding pass from Dimash, making it 3–2. Three minutes later, George found the scoresheet, finishing a well-worked play assisted by Nolan to double the lead and send the Rams into halftime ahead 4–2.
The second half followed a similar pattern. The Rams came out a bit shaky, turning the ball over in their defensive third, but they recovered quickly and neutralized Bishop Diego’s threats. In the 54th minute, George collected a loose ball inside the six-yard box and buried his second goal of the match, extending the lead and effectively putting the game away.
From there, the Rams played disciplined team defense and controlled possession for the remainder of the match, securing a hard-fought 5–2 victory.
The Rams’ previous match against Fillmore took place on December 17, nearly a month ago, and the early rust was evident during the opening ten minutes. However, the team regrouped, settled into the match, and responded with confidence and authority. The squad has been training hard since returning, but nothing replaces match play. With key players healthy and the group continuing to play collectively, the foundation is in place for a successful season.
The Rams will return to Meldman Field on Thursday as they host the Dunn Earwigs at 3:00 p.m. We appreciate the support from everyone who came out today and hope to see you again at our next match
