Rams Struggle to Score Against Nordhoff

December 16, 2025

Cate GVBB 31 vs Nordhoff 54

Tough loss for the Cate girls varsity basketball team against Nordhoff. Despite Nordhoff’s record, they have played more games and feature multiple scorers, making them a challenging opponent.

The Rams came out ready. Knowing we had a height advantage, we capitalized on it early. In addition to multiple steals and deflections that caused Nordhoff to struggle to get into their offense, we saw strong first-quarter offensive performances from seniors Maia Holmes with 5 points and Emerson Evans with 6 points, as well as sophomores Josie Song and Riya Mitera, who each added 4 points.

Unfortunately, we went cold for the next 16 minutes, struggling to find one another, set up quality shots, and convert baskets. Nordhoff exploited one of our biggest weaknesses: handling pressure in both the half-court and full-court. Once they applied pressure, we lost confidence and fell back into bad habits, turning the ball over. Despite these struggles, we were only down four at halftime.

Nordhoff opened the third quarter on a run, fueled by key outside shooting from their guards, including #23, leading the Rangers with 22 points on the night. In the second half, our scoring was limited to contributions from Song (6 points), Evans (1 point), and Holmes (2 points).

We don’t have time to dwell on this loss, as we play our second league game of the season tomorrow against Laguna Blanca. Tip-off is at 6:00 p.m. at home, and we’re hoping to turn the tide and apply pressure to Laguna.
