Cate: 11+10+10+10 = 41
Santa Clara: 0+5+4+6= 15
The Cate girls’ varsity basketball team had its first game back since Fall Break and secured a strong team win over Santa Clara, 41–15. The Rams put together four balanced quarters, received contributions from every player, and gained crucial experience for our young squad.
After shaking off some early nerves on our home court, we picked up our tempo and capitalized on our height, pushing the ball in transition, hitting our posts at the high post, and watching our bigs find each other for good looks. We were led by sophomore Josie Song, who set the tone with her pace, toughness, and relentless energy. She led all scorers with 14 points and was instrumental in driving our tempo throughout the night. The Rams set the tone early with an 11-point first quarter while holding Santa Clara scoreless.
In the first half, we also got standout performances from senior Emerson Evans, junior Nina Bhatia, freshman Alice Zhang, and sophomore Violette Hogan. Evans finished the night with 8 points and 8 rebounds before exiting early after taking a hit to the face. Had she played through the third and fourth quarters, Evans was well on her way to a double-double. Bhatia was a defensive stopper, collecting multiple steals and rebounds. Zhang provided key outside shooting and terrific defense. Hogan was a spark off the bench, forcing a turnover with a deflection, grabbing multiple offensive boards, and assisting Evans on a low-post finish.
Our goals for the second half were to stay focused, continue pushing the tempo, and dominate the glass. The team responded by working hard on the boards, creating extra scoring opportunities. We had balanced scoring throughout, with five different players scoring in the second half alone.
We’re back in action for our first league game at Villanova on 12/11. Thank you to the students and teachers who came out to support us tonight. We’re so grateful for the energy!
