Rams Battle to Historic Win Over Malibu

Boys Varsity Water Polo Cate vs Malibu

Yesterday, September 30th, our Cate boys’ water polo team hosted its first league match against perennial league champions Malibu High School. After two one-goal battles last season, this was a game both teams had circled on their calendars. Tied after the first and second quarters, we were able to capture momentum and grind out a gritty second-half victory. A physically strong, smart, and fundamentally sound defense allowed us to pull ahead in the third quarter. Fatigue settled in for both teams by the fourth quarter, but our guys were able to dig deep in a total team effort.

Everyone who saw the pool made contributions and had an impact on our win, but here are the notable showings. Yet again, 9th grader Liam Moes led the charge offensively. Explosive is the word I would use to describe him. All of his scoring opportunities are taken with no hesitation and leave no doubt. Andrew Sheshunoff had his best showing of the season in the cage. The Junior standout racked up nine saves, gave up no goals outside of five meters, and held the Sharks to no scores on man-up situations in the second half. Emmanuel Brine had the momentum play of the game in the 4th quarter. At the point in the game where the score was close and everyone was exhausted, we drew up a play for ‘the engine.’ Emman was able to earn an exclusion and then converted the score on the power play.

I am so proud of our group for their resilience and how they leaned on one another during a difficult match. This was the first time in school history that we beat Malibu HS in water polo. Looking ahead, we travel to Ventura on Thursday for a league match against Foothill Tech High School. Go Rams!
