Yesterday, October 4th, our Cate boys water polo team traveled to Oxnard for day two of the Bunea/Ventura tournament. Game one featured a matchup with East Redlands HS. Redlands did a great job of putting us on our heels early. We were down one starter due to injury and found ourselves down two more by halftime due to foul trouble. We were able to hang in and make this a super competitive and exciting game. In the final minute, we had the lead and were in a position to seal the game. We were unable to close the game out and had some learning moments in late-game execution.

We had some significant contributions in this one. Sebastian Brine was outstanding offensively, scoring five goals and racking up three assists. His outside shooting and playmaking were crafty and effective; it was impressive to watch. Fletcher Prince also had a terrific outside shooting game. He was able to create advantages all game with his size and produced for us time and time again. Ashwin Patel made contributions on both ends of the pool, and Eric Gan scored a big-time goal for us.

Game 2 – Camarillo HS

Cate 10 = 3 + 4 + 1 + 2

Camarillo 8 = 2 + 1 + 4 + 1

Goals: Sebastian Brine (4), Liam Moes (3), Fletcher Prince (2), Elliott Paige (1)

Assists: Fletcher Prince (3), Emil Arconian (1)

Takeaways: Jae Wykoff (7), Elliott Paige (5), Ashwin Patel (1), Fletcher Prince (1), Liam Moes (1)

Saves: Andrew Sheshunoff (6)

Our fourth and final game of the tournament was against Camarillo HS for 7th place. We played a clean and complete game in this one. I was proud of the effort, attention to detail, and game plan execution that our guys showed. After an emotional morning game and a fatiguing weekend, our guys responded really well to adversity. It was great to finish the weekend with a positive win against a solid program.

Jae Wykoff and Elliott Paige were instrumental in our team’s success with fantastic defensive showings. Jae was spectacular as a help defender, and Elliott’s one-on-one defense was lights out. Sebastian and Liam led the offensive charge for us – Seb scoring from the outside and Liam on the interior of Camarillo’s defense. Andrew Sheshunoff had a crucial second-half penalty block for us, his third of the weekend. Emil Arconian played a significant number of minutes and added valuable offensive/defensive contributions to our lineup.

Looking ahead, we travel to play another league opponent, Villanova Prep, on Tuesday. Go Rams!
