Friday, October 3rd, our Cate boys water polo team traveled to Ventura HS for day one of the Buena/Ventura tournament. Game one featured a matchup with Royal High School. After a slow offensive start, we were able to find our rhythm and make some key adjustments. We fought our way back in a tight back-and-forth game and walked away with a one-goal win. Just two seasons ago, we hosted Royal for a non-league game and lost 23-2, so this win felt extra special for our upperclassmen.

Senior captain Sebastian Brine led the charge offensively, producing three huge counterattack goals. In a defensive battle, it was awesome to see Seb playing aggressively offensively, looking for his shot. Our game MVP was goalkeeper Andrew Sheshunoff. He tallied a career high of 15 saves from the net, allowing no goals outside five meters. He was on fire all game and bailed us out time and time again with some pretty spectacular blocks.

Game 2 – Canyon Crest HS

Cate 1 = 1 + 0 + 0 + 0

Canyon Crest 15 = 4 + 4 + 4 + 3

Goals: Elliott Paige (1)

Assists: Jae Wykoff (1)

Takeaways: Andrew Sheshunoff (1), Jae Wykoff (1), Sebastian Brine (1), Tristan Maigret (1), Eric Jin (1), Fletcher Prince (1)

Saves: Andrew Sheshunoff (9)

Game two of the day featured a match against the San Diego powerhouse Canyon Crest HS. We were ill-prepared for a match against a team of this caliber in game two of the day. I have to give all the credit to their program; They were in synch all afternoon. A structured six-player counterattack, cohesive team defense, and talented/high-IQ players gave us a fair amount of trouble in this one.

There were some bright spots despite the score being what it was. Elliott Paige scored a really nice outside shot in the first period. He was able to attack the zone defense and slot a high corner shot into the back of the net. Andrew Sheshunoff had another terrific showing. He blocked two penalty shots during the match and recorded some other high-level saves during the match.

Looking ahead, we will be competing tomorrow for a shot at 5th place. Our morning game will be against Redlands East Valley High School, and game two will be against either Camarillo or league rival, Malibu. Stay tuned for updates. Go Rams!
