Boys Water Polo Topple Newbury Park in Season Opener

August 29, 2025

By Head Coach Jesse Morrison

Yesterday, August 28th, our Cate boys varsity water polo team traveled to Newbury Park High School for our first non-league match of the season. It was great to have this hungry team back in the pool after a successful 2024 season. We jumped to an early advantage, turning stifling defense into fast-paced counterattack opportunities. Our movement-based offense allowed us to attack Newbury’s tough team defense in various ways. Holding a talented team like that to only two goals at halftime showed how special our defense can be. I was proud of the effort, excitement, and togetherness our guys showed in game one of a long season.

New 9th grader Liam Moes lit up the scoreboard, scoring and finding his teammates all game. He found the back of the net on the counterattack, via post-ups and front-court drives, and when attacking a zone. His efficiency was equally impressive, only missing one shot in four quarters of play. Jae Wykoff was up to his old tricks, shutting down center play all game. His ability to press without fouling and communicate with his teammates is a massive tool for our group. Emmanuel Brine has taken huge strides since last year and provides an excellent motor for our group. The energy and physicality he plays with will be hard to match by anyone we go up against.

Looking ahead, we take a week to hike in the backcountry before returning to action against Santa Barbara High School on September 11th. Go Rams!
