This Week in Athletics

February 3, 2023

With the exception of our playoff-bound teams, the winter season has come to an end. The weather has finally turned for the better here on the Mesa just in time for spring sports. But before we begin those sports next week, we want to talk a moment to recognize our winter teams.

The girls water polo team ended their season this week but not before getting their first win of the season with a 20-6 win over Channel Islands High School. Although the record did not show it, the girls season was filled with great accomplishments. A team that is still relatively young and inexperienced made significant strides throughout the season in their skills and teamwork, and if they are able to pick up next year where they are leaving off this season, the Rams are going to surprise a lot of teams. Coach Morrison and Coach Duffy would like to say a big thank you and congratulations to seniors Liz Sutter ’23, Lylie Bechtel ’23, Myla Van Lynde ’23, Cathleen Chow ’23, and Stella Meister ’23.

The boys soccer team earned a spot in the CIF playoffs this year after a 6-3-2 (4-2-2) record. The season thus far has been defined by mini streaks of wins, losses, and ties with the Rams currently riding a two-game winning streak into the playoffs. The boys will find out who they will match up against in the first round when the bracket is released Saturday morning. Coach Reynoso and Coach Molina send a big thank you to seniors Sage Hou and Jae Lim on great careers thus far.

Girls soccer had an outstanding season going 11-2-1 (9-0-1) to win their league and book a trip to the CIF playoff. The Rams have been an almost unstoppable force this year plowing through their competition. A tough loss to Thacher right before the end of the season was a hard one for the team to take, but they bounced back to their winning ways to finish the regular season and get ready for their playoff run. Like the boys team, the girls will find out their first-round match-up on Saturday morning. A huge thank you from Coach Wyatt and Coach Holmes to seniors Ava Bracher ’23, Tamsyn Taptich ’23, Emie Nam ’23, Phebe Hancock ’23, Gigi Geyer ’23, and Ellie Tunnell ’23 on outstanding careers.

Boys basketball finished their season with a 12-7 (5-3) record just missing out on the league title in the last week of play. After a great start to the season, the group hit a tough patch in the middle of their schedule going up against very tough competition and a few injuries that plagued them for a few weeks. However, the Rams bounced back to finish the year winning all but one game in their last seven, including an incredibly exciting game over Thacher, earning them a spot in the CIF playoffs. The decision on who they will play in the first round will be released on Sunday afternoon. Coach Gil and Coach Cordero send a big thank you to seniors Babacar Pouye ’23, Jengus Erci ’23l, Marley Joseph ’23, Daniel Lee ’23, William Vanica ’23, and Jack Higgins ’23 on a fantastic four years.

The girls basketball team finished the season with an 8-6 (6-0) record to win their league and earn a spot in the CIF playoffs. After a difficult start to the season, the Rams turned their season around on a dime finishing the season on a six game win streak just before having that streak snapped in the last game. With that momentum on their side, the group will look to rally for their first round matchup that will be released Sunday afternoon, as well. Coach Moore and Coach Weir would like to thank seniors Desi Flores ’23, Kendall Thorne ’23, Nicole Teh ’23, Mary Foster ’23, and Talia Tom ’23 on their great work over the past four years
