Varsity Football vs Santa Clara

September 25, 2022

Cate’s football team picked up its second win in as many weeks with a 65-14 victory over Santa Clara. The Rams are now 2-1.

As the score might suggest, Cate scored early and often. The first play from scrimmage saw Cate quarterback Pen Brooks ’24 go 65 yards for a score. After a Santa Clara safety, Cate scored three more rushing touchdowns in the first quarter. The first came from Zaq Asuamah ’23 from 30 yards out, the second from Kristian Scurtis ’24 from 5 yards away, and the third from Joba Samson ’25 from 35 yards. Samson ’25 found the end zone again in the second quarter on a 16-yard scurry. Cate’s final first-half touchdown came from Asuamah ’23 from 20 yards out. The Rams didn’t attempt a pass in the first half and went into the break with a 44-0 lead. Santa Clara scored on the opening kick of the second half, but Cate quickly responded with a 60-yard scamper from Cody Mast ’25. A second-half running clock limited Cate’s possessions, but the Rams were able to score two more times in the 4th quarter. Mast ’25 found the end zone again, this time from 37 yards out. Cate closed out their scoring on a 12-yard carry from quarterback Quinn Pullen ’25. Santa Clara found the end zone on the final play of the contest to finish the game.
Cate’s defense was stout all game long. Scurtis ’24 recovered a fumble that was caused by Crosby Rosenthal ’24. Jack Higgins ’23, Jack Whalen ’23, Barron Crayton ’26, and Muhsin Hakim ’24 all had great games for the Rams defensively.
I’m proud of the way we played today. Everyone got in on the action which is always exciting. We put some guys in different positions today, which will no doubt help our depth this year. We will build on this momentum as we look to improve going forward.
Cate’s next game will be played at Carpinteria High School at 6 pm on Friday, September 30th against longtime rival, Thacher. Go Rams!
