Boys Varsity Soccer vs Thacher

December 7, 2021

Playing their first road game of the season, the Rams traveled down the road to take on Thacher in Ojai. The adrenaline was overflowing for the Rams and the nerves were evident in the first few minutes of the match. The Toads came out with a high press that caused a turnover in Cate’s defensive third and they took advantage of a rare defensive breakdown to open the scoring in the 10th minute. Thacher used a high press and held a high defensive backline that we initially found hard to break since our front three possessed a lot of speed.

We finally got our timing down in the 14th minute when sophomore Seb Sutch received a ball at midfield, then flew up the right flank slowing down only to change directions to avoid Toad defenders, he dribbled to the end line, then fired a shot on goal that deflected of a backpedaling defender and into the goal to tie the score 1-1. That goal gave us momentum and we started to click offensively. Seb got his second goal of the night in the 26th minute on a beautiful breakaway goal with an assist from fellow sophomore Ari Seal. Senior Peter Wood joined the scoring onslaught two minutes later on yet another breakaway. Then, senior Daniel Boateng fresh off a flight from the east coast got going and scored his first of three in the 36th minute off an assist from fellow countryman, freshman Samuel Anum. Freshman Uriel Beltran came off the bench in the 35th¬† minute and decided that he wanted to score as well and scored his first of the season in the 38th when the toad goalkeeper cleared a ball that landed at Uri’s feet just outside the 18-yard box, and Uri calmly settled the ball and took a shot that floated over the toad defense and into the left upper corner giving the Rams a 5-1 lead at the half.

The halftime talk from the coaching staff was about maintaining composure, putting opponents away, and not being overconfident. I guess the Rams were still talking about Uri’s goal and not paying attention because the second started the same way the first half did. The toads struck again just a few minutes into the half and again 10 minutes later but Boateng and the Rams responded with a goal within minutes and held on for the 7-3 victory. It wasn’t a pretty win but it’s a win nevertheless. We have a lot of work ahead of us as we prepare for league play. We need to focus on discipline, composure, and capitalizing on a higher percentage of our scoring chances in order to succeed. The Rams next take on Dunn Thursday¬†@ 3:00 at home. This will be our first true test of the season. Please come out and support
