Baseball vs Foothill Tech

May 13, 2021

This Wednesday, May 12th, the Cate Rams varsity baseball team played a clean game against a tough Foothill Tech Dragons team, winning by a score of 6-3.

The Rams were able to lean on a gutsy performance from senior Daniel Panadero on the mound, who went 6 and two-thirds innings, striking out 4 and giving up only 3 runs against a good lineup. With a true bulldog mentality, Panadero wanted to finish the game, and probably would have, had he not been at the 110 pitch limit. Defensively, the Rams benefitted from a stellar diving snag on a foul pop-up near the home dugout by junior Matty Holmes, who continued to be a wall behind the plate while also gunning down a runner at second. Also impressive with the glove were juniors Tyler Tom, Aidan Carlander, John Endres, and sophomore Emmett Mack, with the latter two combining for a perfect relay to cut down a run at the plate on a good tag by Holmes.

At the plate, the Rams were paced once again by Mack, who hit his third ball over the fence in his last eight at-bats, going deep to straightaway center field. It’s a testament to the fact that this was a true team win that no Ram had more than a single hit, with the homer by Mack being the only extra-base hit. The biggest at-bat of the game, in fact, was a fielder’s choice by junior June Bae, who ducked his head out of the way of a curveball that bounced off his bat and rolled perfectly down the third-base line, forcing a good fielding team into an error that drove in two runs. Contributing singles to the effort were Holmes, Panadero, Endres, freshman Declan Forest, senior Cooke Tarlton, and freshman Liam Burdick. Burdick’s pinch-hit single off the bench drove in senior Will Morse, who has been a force pinch-running off the bench for the Rams this season, for a key insurance run. With that extra cushion, Mack entered to pitch in the top of the seventh with two out and the tying run at the plate, and struck out the Dragons’ cleanup hitter on three straight fastballs to end the game.

This was a great team win. With events of this past week, seeing this team support each other and come out like this caused tears to fall in the post-game huddle. This team showed resiliency and heart, and we, as a coaching staff, couldn’t be more proud of them. The Rams (6-1) will complete the two-game set against the Dragons by traveling to Ventura this Saturday, where they hope to remain undefeated in league play.
