This Week in Athletics

December 4, 2020

Since our last update, California has moved back into a more restrictive stage. This has led to any guidance regarding youth sports to be put on hold until further notice.

Due to this, CIF has postponed the start of the fall sports season with plans to revisit on the first of the year. What does this mean for Cate? We will continue to run our afternoon sports programs as if the season were beginning. Adjustments have been made to create spaces for teams that would normally participate indoors. Volleyball nets have been put up in the baseball outfield, and basketball hoops have been constructed on a couple of the tennis courts — both spaces have been seeing a lot of traffic between the afternoon programs and during students’ down time.

Our hope is that upon our return from winter break we will be greeted with news from CIF and the state that we can resume our fall season. We look forward to seeing all of our student-athletes back in action in the near future.

Scholar Athlete of the Year

We are excited to announce that the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table is honoring Riley Borchardt ’21 as the Scholar Athlete of the Year for Cate School. The SBART is an organization, sponsored by numerous businesses in the Santa Barbara area that honors local student-athletes for their accomplishments on and off the field.

Riley has been a standout performer on both the volleyball court and the lacrosse field for the Rams, having led her teams to league titles and multiple CIF Sectional appearances. As a member of the volleyball team, she garnered first team all-league recognition as a sophomore and second team honors as a junior.

“Riley is one of those students we are so fortunate to have,” said Director of Athletics Wade Ransom during the award presentation. “She impacts all aspects of life here at Cate. This award is a spectacular way in which the SBART is able to recognize young people in our community and there is no one more deserving than Riley.”

Congratulations, Riley, on an outstanding high school career to this point! We hope to see you in the gym and out on the field again for your senior year.
